Am I abnormal because I enjoy the bloodier, chunkier side of life? I think not.

So here we have this game with an immense scope, great technologies to research, lots of shiptypes and structures to be built and Capital ships with varied and unique abilities. But in almost every replay that I have watched, I am seeing a distrubing trend where players ignorie a lot of these assets.

Players seem to focus on playing the smallest map they can find. They churn out tons of 1 or 2 shiptypes. There are threads out begging for options to speed up multiplayer.

Is it me or are players ignoring the fact that Sins was envisioned as an inherently slower, more strategic game? Is there anyway to find online games that don't cram 4,5 or even 6 people onto a medium map? Does anyone *enjoy* the idea of researching more than the most basic of technologies and trying different startegies, or is multiplayer simply focused on seeing who can make the most long-range frigates and steamroll their opponent?

just saying if you want long games try stardock chat or ask clans on this forums
they have all kinds off people who like short and long games this is how i get players when i am in the mood for a long game

I've said it before and I will say it again, the choice to go with infinite resources plays a huge role in how sins is playing with respects to churning out ships (often of the same type)and lessening consequence for poor strategic and tactical decisions --> not everyone agrees with this though.

heres another overlooked option...

Turn down the settings, when you host. Theres no law saying everything has to be cranked up to fast. If you want more plotting, slow down the pace before you even start.

If anyone who is worth thier weight in salt will look at the options before they "sign thier name up to play"... Then youll have what your looking for.

I find with most games, and this one in particular, I have the most fun playing super long game on LAN with friends. I haven't even attempted playing online, simply because I know what I can expect on LAN and I enjoy it.

It's a direct parallel to tactical FPS. People are always going to like run 'n' gun mindless shoot em ups, but if you don't like it, just don't play with them. Find a group of like mind to play slow and smart with instead.

It's not really a direct parallel to fps run'n'gun mindless shoot em ups.

Unless you're only a few jumps away from your opponents, there a number of strategies that are viable on small maps. On large maps, yes there more strategic options, but the same skills/strategies/tactics needed to survive and do well on a small map also apply to them. Thus, playing on large maps only drags out the inevitable. The player with better strategy will still win. The player with better game understanding, scouting, etc, will still win.

For those of you saying sins is much deeper game than Starcraft, I really hate to say it, but I don't see that being true. There's not that many strategies in sins and attacks are much more predictable. Don't get me wrong though, sins has had a great start and I'm hoping expansions and patches give it some much needed enrichment (ie, more units, better tech trees, alternate ways to win, alternate ways to attack, etc... in other words, more variables to the overall game).

If I can beat you on the smallest map possible, the bigger map will just make it more one sided. No point in dragging it out for 4 hours.
Because we all know that any game is all about the end result of winning or losing, and not about enjoying the experience of actually, you know, playing the game.

I really dislike Starcraft, but I completely agree.

As much as I would like to agree with you on this, I do find that mid game, a huge LRM wall is strategically viable. However, late game if you don't mix it up, you just start a massive war of attrition with a planet by planet grind, essentially you make a 5 hour stalemate.

Anytime I play a big map I get so far ahead of people they usually quit before we fight. Or quit as soon as they see my fleet for the first time. At least on smaller map I get to kill few units. And whatever you feel the game was envisioned to be, it is my game. I paid for it, and I will play it how I like it.

He's right, from his expert clan-member and powerplayer perspective.

Simply avoid playing, on ICO, with people who have a clan tag associated to their nick. Or else :

The author of the quote is blunt on what would be your fate.

I only play alone, in SP, taking my time to develop the other, more civ-building dimensions of the game (as the thread's OP mentions) :

I paid for it, and that's how I like to play it.

I agree with Fractallicon and by the time all the so called balance tweaks are done the game is going to be speed orientated.... utter crap.

If it doesnt work out so each faction is more than watered down rubbish in the end that makes them near identical I will probably do the same. I would also like to get together with somepeople online that like playing a game on normal speed that are willing to play a game in multiple sittings , if people were inventive and a person cant play you could get another player to take their place where they left off.

Totally agree with the quote though ....... /signed

Note: Really will have to start watching the double posts put the edit button functionality seems sporadic on every initial post I make, would be nice to have an edit button showing for all posts.

Play me on a big map I will lose , you will have an easy game , I will learn from it, I wont DC until you have destroyed everything. Everybody wins! I see what you are saying but surely its unfair to alter game mechanics based on everyone being a total idiot, that just isn't the case.

It will be that way by the time everyone changes sins so it is like every other strat out there, sins is unique lets keep it that way. I suppose its a matter of opinion , but if I liked starcraft so much thats what I would be playing now if it was deeper. Its down to personal preferance in all fairness and sins catered to vet and newbie alike but I can see this changing and I worry
